Senior Fire Health and Safety Advisor

Location: Ipswich/Hybrid

The Civil Works Alliance (CWA) is seeking a highly skilled an experienced Senior Fire Health and Safety Advisor  to work in the Engineering and Assurance team to deliver temporary works design and undertake design coordination across all sections of the CWA delivery and stages of project technical lifecycle.

CWA, appointed by the Sizewell C client, brings together three leading delivery contractors — Laing O'Rourke, Bouygues, and Balfour Beatty — to deliver the civils scope including Enabling Earthworks, Main Civil Works, and Marine and Tunnelling.

We are looking for a Senior Fire Safety Advisor to join the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) and support the HSW Fire and Emergency Planning Lead with CWA Fire Safety compliance site wide at Sizewell C, involving cooperation and coordination with the client, contractors and regulatory bodies. Ensuring CWA Fire Safety remains suitable and sufficient with the risks associated with the work being undertaken and supports the delivery teams to achieve operational excellence in respect of Fire Safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supports the HSW Fire and Emergency Planning Lead to develop and drive Fire Safety for all CWA areas.
  • Develop and maintain Fire Safety processes and procedures in line with regulatory requirements and project needs.
  • Ensure CWA activities comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO), Fire Safety Act/Regulations updates, and relevant construction Standards across temporary and permanent works, including occupied site facilities.
  • Support SZC and CWA in demonstrating robust construction fire safety controls consistent with ONR expectations.
  • Drive behavioural Fire Safety and competence (briefings, drills, training) for CWA teams and Tier 2/3 contractors: mentor junior HSW/Fire Advisors.
  • Embed fire prevention/mitigation requirements into methods, temporary works and construction sequencing (including hot works, temporary power, timber/combustibles, storage/segregation), consistent with HSG168 and CDM 2015 principles
  • Analyse fire safety leading/lagging indicators, report trends, and feed lessons learned across CWA and parent companies; support incident investigations to CWA standards.
  • Lead and periodically review task-/area-specific fire risk assessments for CWA areas, ensure actions are closed and maintained.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • Good knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Ability to influence and promote a positive Fire Safety culture, by providing constructive feedback to others around their performance, strengths and development needs.
  • Able to engage at all levels within the CWA operational team structure.

Has knowledge of:

  • The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
  • HSG168 Fire safety in construction
  • Fire Safety in CDM Legislation
  • Building Safety Act 2022
  • Able to use data and information for the preparation of Fire Safety reports.
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Managers and Professionals competence

Qualifications

  • NEBOSH Fire or Fire Safety Certificate.
  • Experience of using and developing health and safety management systems

Desireable

  • Fire Safety Level 4 Certification.
  • Has previously experience in a Senior Fire Safety role with relevant construction related or transferable skills.
  • DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations)
