Risk Manager – Major UK Power Infrastructure Programme

Value: £Multi‑Billion | Nationally Significant | Energy Transition

  • Birmingham (+ site visits)
    Permanent | Full‑time
    Power / Major Civil Infrastructure

Shape the risk strategy for one of the UK's most important infrastructure programmes

This is a rare opportunity to take a lead risk role on a multi‑billion‑pound upgrade of the UK power network — a long‑term programme critical to the UK's energy security and transition to clean power.

As Risk Manager within the Great Grid Partnership — an alliance between National Grid, Laing O'Rourke and strategic delivery partners — you'll work at programme level, influencing decisions that affect cost, schedule, delivery confidence and long‑term value.

If you're motivated by scale, complexity and genuine influence, this role offers visibility, stability and professional stretch in equal measure.

What you'll be responsible for

You'll lead risk management across multiple, interconnected major projects, helping senior leaders and delivery teams make informed, balanced decisions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Owning and evolving the programme‑level risk management framework
  • Facilitating collaborative risk identification and risk mitigation workshops
  • Quantifying risk impacts to cost, schedule and contingency
  • Supporting robust, proportionate contingency and forecasting approaches
  • Translating complex risk data into clear, meaningful insight for senior stakeholders
  • Advising leadership on risk exposure, opportunity and mitigation strategy
  • Maintaining transparent, high‑quality risk reporting and governance
  • Working across interfaces including ground risk, environment, supply chain, inflation, design and delivery integration

This is a hands‑on, influential role where your judgement and insight will directly shape outcomes across the programme.

Who this role suits

You'll thrive in this role if you enjoy working at the intersection of data, judgement and people, and you're confident operating in a collaborative, major‑project environment.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Experience in risk, commercial or project controls on large infrastructure or construction programmes
  • Strong understanding of risk quantification and cost/schedule impact analysis
  • Experience using risk tools (including Riskonnect ARM)
  • The ability to bring structure and clarity to complex, multi‑stakeholder environments
  • Confident, credible communication skills with senior leaders and delivery teams
  • A collaborative mindset — comfortable influencing without hierarchy

Qualifications and experience considered in Quantity Surveyor, Project Quantity Surveyor, Project Management or Risk Management are valued.
Professional accreditation (IRM, APM, PMI, CIOB Risk) is welcomed but not essential.

Transferable tools considered: Primavera, CEMAR, Active Risk Manager

Why this opportunity stands out

  • Multi‑billion‑pound, nationally critical programme
  • Long‑term stability on a flagship energy transition project
  • Programme‑level influence — not just project‑by‑project delivery
  • Close working with National Grid and major delivery partners
  • Strong focus on innovation, digital tools and modern risk practice
  • A collaborative partnership model where your voice is heard
  • Clear opportunity to shape how risk is managed at scale

Travel will include Birmingham‑based working and periodic site visits as the programme develops.
