Product Development Engineer

Technology & Innovation Introduction

Transforming Construction with Design, Detailing and product innovation whilst building advanced manufacturing facilities to support MMC.

What if your engineering ideas could help shape the future of construction?

Join Laing O'Rourke's Technology & Innovation Team and work at the forefront of construction innovation. You'll help develop and validate new products, advanced materials and modern construction solutions for some of the world's most complex infrastructure programmes.

This is not a traditional design role. Working alongside experts in engineering, manufacturing, digital technology and research, you'll take innovative concepts from early-stage development through testing and validation to real-world application.

From advancing Steel-Plate composite construction to bespoke automated manufacturing facilities  supporting the future of clean energy, you'll help create the technologies and solutions that will define the next generation of energy infrastructure.

Role Overview

As a Product Development Engineer within our Technology & Innovation team, you'll combine structural engineering expertise with innovation, manufacturing and product development to create smarter, more efficient ways of delivering major infrastructure projects. Working at the interface of design, manufacturing and construction, you'll help turn innovative concepts into practical, buildable solutions that can be delivered at scale.

What you'll be doing

  • Develop innovative permanent works design solutions that support advanced manufacturing and preassembled reinforcement cage strategies.
  • Lead innovation initiatives that align design, detailing and manufacturing requirements.
  • Collaborate with design automation and configuration teams to improve efficiency, consistency and repeatability.
  • Identify and develop new product opportunities, ensuring solutions are technically robust, compliant and manufacturable.
  • Provide early-stage engineering input to embed Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) into future projects.
  • Deliver structural engineering support across a range of Technology & Innovation activities.
  • Optimise design and detailing approaches to improve buildability, productivity and project outcomes.
  • Work closely with engineering, digital, manufacturing and project delivery teams to bring new ideas into real-world application.

What we're looking for

Essential criteria

  • Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Strong civil and structural engineering design capability with a solid understanding of structural behaviour and engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience working within complex engineering design environments and navigating design assurance or approval processes.
  • A passion for innovation, problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with stakeholders, designers, suppliers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and turning ideas into practical solutions.

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, prefabrication or product-based engineering approaches.
  • Experience in innovation, product development, research or R&D environments.
  • Temporary works design experience.
  • Progress towards professional chartership (e.g. ICE or IStructE).
  • Enjoys working across multidisciplinary teams and influencing positive change.
  • Interest in emerging technologies and modern construction methods.
