Are you an experienced construction leader who thrives on delivering complex civil engineering works while championing safety, quality and innovation?
If you're ready to play a key role in delivering critical infrastructure that will strengthen the UK's electricity network and enable the country's transition to renewable energy this is your opportunity!
When you join Laing O'Rourke, you'll become part of an industry-leading engineering and construction team delivering some of the UK's most complex and rewarding infrastructure projects. We are committed to investing in our people through structured development, continuous learning and long-term career opportunities, supporting you to build a rewarding career with us.
What is the Great Grid Upgrade?
The Great Grid Upgrade is the largest overhaul of the UK's electricity transmission network in generations. Led by National Grid, the programme is upgrading and expanding the high-voltage electricity network across England and Wales to transport increasing amounts of renewable energy, improve energy security and support the UK's transition to a low-carbon future.
The Norwich to Tilbury project is a major part of this programme, delivering new transmission infrastructure to increase network capacity across the East of England.
The project includes the construction of approximately 90km of new 400kV overhead line, around 300 transmission towers, 25km of underground cable, a four-bay extension at Bramford Substation, and a new connection into Tilbury Substation. Delivery also includes complex works through environmentally sensitive areas, including Dedham Vale National Landscape, while coordinating with other major infrastructure projects such as the Lower Thames Crossing.
Once complete, the project will enable the connection of major offshore wind developments including East Anglia Two, Hornsea Project Three, Five Estuaries and North Falls, helping to secure the UK's future energy supply.
What is the role?
We're looking for an experienced Senior Construction Manager to lead the safe, efficient and successful delivery of major construction activities across the Norwich to Tilbury project.
Reporting to the Project Director, you'll provide leadership across multiple work fronts, ensuring construction activities are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the highest quality standards.
You'll work closely with engineering, commercial and project teams, National Grid, designers and key supply chain partners to drive performance, manage risk and deliver one of the UK's largest infrastructure programmes.
Location: Based in Birmingham until March 2027 then onsite at our project office in Chemlsford.
What you'll bring
- Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in a Senior Construction Manager or similar leadership role delivering major infrastructure or civil engineering projects.
- Experience leading large multidisciplinary construction teams across complex, multi-site projects.
- Strong knowledge of health, safety, environmental and quality management within major construction programmes.
- Proven experience managing subcontractors, programme delivery, construction sequencing and stakeholder relationships.
- Excellent leadership, communication and decision-making skills, with the ability to motivate teams and drive high performance.
- A collaborative approach with a commitment to delivering projects safely, efficiently and to the highest standards.
