Laing O'Rourke are looking for a Section Engineer to work on a major power infrastructure project on behalf of the National Grid - Great Grid Upgrade. 

The EDN2 Scheme comprises of a new 400kV Overhead Line between Chesterfield substation and Willington substation in South Derbyshire. Laing O'Rourke's scope of works along the whole length of this route is to enable the new OHL to be built. LOR will also be constructing the foundations for the OHL Towers. Before construction commences in 2028, a large scale amount of Ground Investigation works is required along the route.

The Section Engineer will be responsible for the site management of the geotechnical and archaeological investigation works scheduled to commence in February 2026. The successful candidate will be working for a Project Engineer and alongside a Construction Manager, to manage and deliver the scheduled package of work. A Section Engineer is technically responsible for, and able to manage, a section of works. They typically supervise and manage a team of 2 to 4 technicians and site engineers.

Role:

  • Ensuring project delivery, inclusive planning, mobilisation and execution, in strict accordance with LOR & NGET policies and procedures ensuring compliance and adherence to industry standards.
  • Reporting any contract and subcontract management activities, ensuring effective contract administration and coordination with subcontractors.
  • Feedback on any additional site survey requirements to ensure comprehensive project understanding and risk management.
  • Undertaking effective health and safety management in line with the approved plan of works
  • Ensuring consents/planning conditions/CDM areas/ third party interface arrangements are followed in line with the agreed plan
  • Inputs into method statements and risk assessments
  • Ensures that project and company quality procedures are adhered and that they fully address specification and contractual obligations.
  • Record lessons learned and capture knowledge for future projects
  • Use BIM and digital tools to enhance preconstruction output
  • Ensures compliance with the LOR Management of Temporary works procedure on projects.

Requirements:

  • First degree in Civil Engineering Discipline, other construction related degree, or an industry recognised technical or engineering qualification (e.g. HNC, HND, NVQ level 4) plus demonstrable experience in a construction delivery environment.
  • Circa 5 years relevant technical / practical experience within an engineering role.
  • Structures experience - desirable
  • Eligible to work in the UK / valid UK visa
  • Professionally qualified / chartered by a recognised body - desirable
