Join Laing O'Rourke on the Great Grid Upgrade

Are you ready to help transform the UK's energy future? Laing O'Rourke is delivering some of the most ambitious power infrastructure projects in decades - and we're looking for talented Project Quality Engineers to join us across our Great Grid Upgrade portfolio.

The Great Grid Upgrade is a £9bn national programme designed to modernise and expand the UK electricity transmission network, enabling National Grid's mission to connect up to 50GW of offshore wind by 2030.

As a key construction partner, Laing O'Rourke is delivering new substations, major upgrades to existing assets, overhead line routes and underground cable systems across multiple strategic sites.

Why Join Us?
  • Be part of nationally critical infrastructure supporting the shift to clean energy and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Work with cutting‑edge technologies, including SF₆‑free next‑generation switchgear, used on progressive substation projects like Margam.
  • Shape the future of grid resilience, contributing to high‑voltage GIS substations, major transmission reinforcements, and groundbreaking engineering programmes.
  • Grow your career in a collaborative enterprise model at the forefront of mega‑project delivery, supported by Laing O'Rourke's digital engineering and modern construction expertise.

The Role: Project Quality Engineer

You will play a vital role in ensuring technical excellence across complex power infrastructure schemes. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Embedding quality standards across substation builds, overhead line schemes, cabling works, and associated civil and M&E packages.
  • Developing and executing Inspection & Test Plans, auditing site activities, and ensuring compliance with engineering, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Collaborating closely with design, construction, commissioning and client teams within the Great Grid Partnership framework—a model designed to accelerate delivery through shared resources and expertise.
  • Driving continual improvement across project lifecycle phases, ensuring cost‑effective, robust, and future‑proof engineering outcomes.

Current x2 Project Quality Engineer roles are based at Chesterfield, Derbyshire & High Marnham, Nottinghamshire.

Who We're Looking For:

You'll thrive in this role if you have:

  • Experience in power transmission, substations, or heavy electrical infrastructure.
  • Strong familiarity with quality management systems, auditing, and compliance frameworks.
  • A proactive mindset, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence diverse engineering teams.
  • A passion for delivering projects that genuinely make a national impact.

Your Impact:

Your work will directly contribute to:

  • Strengthening the UK's electricity network.
  • Supporting renewable energy integration and grid decarbonisation.
  • Enabling next‑generation infrastructure—from green steel transitions to long‑distance transmission reinforcement.

This is more than a job - it's an opportunity to help build the energy system of tomorrow.
