Want to lead a project that's setting the benchmark for the future of the UK's energy infrastructure?
Do you enjoy delivering technically complex engineering projects while driving innovation, sustainability and operational excellence?
Then come and join Laing O'Rourke!
You'll work alongside industry-leading professionals, contribute to one of the UK's most technically advanced electricity infrastructure projects and help deliver infrastructure that will support the country's energy network for decades to come.
When you join Laing O'Rourke, you'll become part of an industry-leading engineering and construction team delivering some of the UK's most complex and rewarding infrastructure projects. We are committed to investing in our people through structured development, continuous learning and long-term career opportunities, supporting you to build a rewarding career with us.
What is the role?
We're looking for an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of the Wimbledon Asset Replacement Scheme, a nationally significant project that will modernise one of London's key electricity transmission assets.
The project involves replacing an existing 275kV air-insulated substation with a state-of-the-art 400kV, 16-bay Gas Insulated Substation (GIS), helping to strengthen the UK's electricity network while supporting future energy demands.
Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, you'll lead multidisciplinary teams throughout the construction phase, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the highest standards of quality. You'll work closely with National Grid, designers, commercial teams and specialist supply chain partners to successfully deliver this technically challenging infrastructure project.
This is far more than a traditional project management role. You'll be leading delivery in a constrained urban environment, coordinating major civil and electrical works, managing complex interfaces and helping deliver a project recognised across the industry for its innovative and sustainable approach.
Why this project?
The Wimbledon Asset Replacement Scheme is one of National Grid's flagship infrastructure projects and has already gained industry recognition for its approach to sustainable delivery.
The project became the first National Grid tender to include a direct carbon reduction weighting and has achieved a 23% reduction in embodied carbon through innovative design, digital engineering and modern construction techniques. These achievements have been recognised with both the National Grid Award and Sustainable Contractor of the Year.
Working on Wimbledon will provide exposure to:
· Delivery of a major 400kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS)
· Installation of Super Grid Transformers, shunt reactors and high-voltage cable systems
· Complex civil engineering works using modern methods of construction
· Digital engineering and Building Information Modelling (BIM)
· Innovative low-carbon construction techniques
· A highly constrained live urban environment requiring detailed planning and stakeholder management
What do we look for?
· Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
· Proven experience as a Project Manager delivering major infrastructure, energy or complex civil engineering projects.
· Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and managing specialist subcontractors.
· Strong commercial awareness with experience managing programme, cost, quality and project risk.
· Excellent knowledge of health & safety, quality and environmental management within major construction projects.
· Experience working collaboratively with clients, designers and supply chain partners to successfully deliver complex projects.
· Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
· A proactive, collaborative approach with a passion for delivering high-quality infrastructure safely and efficiently.
