Do you enjoy solving complex engineering challenges and coordinating the successful delivery of major infrastructure projects?

Want to work on a nationally significant programme helping to strengthen the UK's electricity network for future generations?

Then this is your opportunity.

When you join Laing O'Rourke, you'll become part of an industry-leading engineering and construction team delivering some of the UK's most complex and rewarding infrastructure projects. We are committed to investing in our people through structured development, continuous learning and long-term career opportunities, supporting you to build a rewarding career with us.

What is the Great Grid Upgrade?

The Great Grid Upgrade is the largest overhaul of the UK's electricity transmission network in generations. Led by National Grid, the programme involves upgrading and expanding the high-voltage electricity network across England and Wales to transport increasing amounts of renewable energy, improve energy security and support the UK's transition to a low-carbon future.

The Carlisle to Scottish Border (CMN3) project forms part of the wider Cross Border Connection programme and will deliver a new 400kV transmission connection between the Scottish border and a new Carlisle Substation. The project comprises approximately 30-40km of new overhead line infrastructure, together with associated transmission assets and network connections. Laing O'Rourke's scope includes intrusive ground investigations, enabling works, access routes, highway improvements, haul roads, watercourse crossings, vegetation clearance and overhead line foundations.

Initially based from our Birmingham office, the project will transition to site-based delivery in the Carlisle area as works progress through the development and pre-construction stages.

What is the role?

We're looking for an experienced Project Engineer to support the successful planning and delivery of engineering and construction activities across the CMN3 project.

Reporting into the project leadership team, you will play a key role in coordinating engineering solutions, managing technical interfaces and supporting programme delivery across a range of complex work packages. Working closely with design teams, construction teams, subcontractors and client stakeholders, you'll help ensure the project is delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest standards of quality.

You'll provide engineering leadership across your areas of responsibility, supporting planning, design management, site delivery and technical assurance activities while helping drive project performance and operational excellence.

Working collaboratively with National Grid, designers and the wider delivery team, you'll play a critical role in delivering this nationally significant infrastructure project while championing Laing O'Rourke's commitment to safety, innovation and engineering excellence.

What do we look for?

  • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proven experience as a Project Engineer, Section Engineer or similar role within infrastructure, utilities, energy or major construction projects.
  • Experience coordinating engineering and construction activities across multiple work packages.
  • Strong understanding of health & safety, quality, environmental management and engineering best practice.
  • Experience working closely with design teams, subcontractors and client stakeholders to deliver successful project outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience supporting programme delivery, managing technical risk and driving project performance.
  • Excellent communication, planning and stakeholder management skills.
  • A collaborative approach with a commitment to delivering projects safely, on programme and to the highest quality standards.

Location: Birmingham office initially, with transition to the Carlisle area as the project progresses through delivery phases.
