Expanded are looking for an experienced Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership on some of our multi-million pound infrastructure projects.

This is an opportunity to influence how complex engineering is delivered, not simply oversee it. You will help introduce better methods, challenge established approaches and ensure that innovation delivers tangible improvements in safety, quality, programme and cost.

You will also contribute to the wider engineering capability of Laing O'Rourke by sharing knowledge, developing talent and promoting best practice across projects and teams

You will play a key role in shaping construction methodology, resolving complex technical challenges and ensuring that design intent is successfully translated into safe, efficient and buildable solutions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Taking technical responsibility for the construction and engineering delivery of a large project.
  • Leading, developing and supporting a team of Project Engineers.
  • Reviewing complex permanent and temporary works solutions.
  • Working closely with Design Management to resolve design interfaces and improve buildability.
  • Driving technical assurance, quality, inspection and testing across the project.
  • Identifying opportunities for value engineering, innovation and more efficient construction methods.
  • Promoting the use of DfMA and Digital Engineering throughout design and delivery.
  • Reviewing technical risks and ensuring appropriate mitigation is in place.
  • Supporting the selection and management of specialist designers, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Leading technical audits, sharing best practice and driving continuous improvement.
  • Providing senior technical guidance to project teams, clients, consultants and supply-chain partners.
  • Supporting the development, training and professional progression of engineers.

You will be an established engineering leader with significant experience delivering technically complex construction projects.

You should have:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, another relevant construction discipline, or an industry-recognised engineering qualification such as an HNC, HND or NVQ Level 4.
  • Circa 12 years' relevant technical or practical engineering experience.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methodology, permanent works and temporary works.
  • Experience managing design interfaces and external consultants.
  • A thorough understanding of quality assurance, inspection, testing and technical compliance.
  • Experience leading and developing engineering teams.
