ServiceNow Platform Architect
Location: Dartford, Manchester or Worksop
Help shape a ServiceNow platform that supports better decisions, more effective services and sustainable technology delivery across Laing O'Rourke.
This is an opportunity to guide the technical direction of an important enterprise platform. You will collaborate with technology teams, business stakeholders and delivery partners to create solutions that are secure, scalable and designed for long-term value.
Laing O'Rourke's IT function has renewed its strategy to support the company's ambition to transform the construction industry, making it more sustainable, more productive, and fit for the future.
Technology has a critical role to play in achieving this ambition. Our focus is on applying digital capability in ways that genuinely matter, shaping how complex projects are delivered, how decisions are made, and how innovation improves outcomes for people, communities, and the environment.
Our mission is clear: to create a modern and resilient technology environment where trusted data informs every decision, AI enhances every process, and digital capability enables the organisation to operate with greater scale and productivity.
To deliver this, we are building a different kind of IT function, one that is trusted by the business, forward looking in its thinking, and deeply connected to operational outcomes. We are looking for individuals who are curious, thoughtful, and motivated by contributing to work that has real industry impact.
The role
As our ServiceNow Platform Architect, you will define and evolve the technical architecture of the ServiceNow platform, ensuring it remains secure, scalable, supportable and aligned with our enterprise architecture principles and business priorities.
You will provide architectural guidance across the ServiceNow ecosystem, shaping design standards and supporting technical decisions across capabilities including ITSM, ITOM, CMDB, ITAM, SPM, App Engine and integrations.
Working collaboratively with platform, engineering, delivery, product and enterprise architecture teams, you will translate strategic requirements into sustainable platform designs and roadmaps. Your contribution will help strengthen the platform's foundations, improve data quality, make better use of existing capabilities and increase the value delivered through ServiceNow.
Key responsibilities
- Define the target architecture and technical direction for ServiceNow, ensuring that changes contribute to a coherent and sustainable platform.
- Establish clear architectural standards and guardrails, providing proportionate design assurance for significant platform changes.
- Translate complex business and technical requirements into scalable ServiceNow solution designs that can be delivered and supported effectively.
- Provide architectural direction for CMDB and ITOM capabilities, including ITOM Visibility and Discovery, to strengthen operational data foundations.
- Shape consistent integration designs that connect ServiceNow effectively with the wider enterprise technology landscape.
- Promote the appropriate use of standard ServiceNow capabilities and reusable design patterns.
- Guide teams towards practical solutions that balance strategic objectives with delivery needs.
- Support the simplification and standardisation of the platform while reducing avoidable customisation and technical debt.
- Maintain visibility of architectural risks and technical debt, helping teams agree appropriate priorities and actions.
- Engage early in the delivery lifecycle to reduce redesign, rework and unnecessary complexity.
- Help ensure that ServiceNow upgrades and new capabilities can be adopted without being constrained by historic design decisions.
- Communicate architectural decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
Essential experience
- Proven experience in a solution, platform or enterprise architecture role within a complex technology environment.
- A clear understanding of architecture principles, patterns and governance approaches.
- Experience designing technology solutions that are secure, scalable, maintainable and aligned with enterprise standards.
- Experience across the technology lifecycle, including design, delivery and optimisation.
- The ability to build trusted relationships and guide decision-making across different stakeholder groups.
- The ability to combine strategic thinking with practical and proportionate delivery.
- Experience identifying and managing technical debt and supporting continuous improvement.
- Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Desirable experience
- Experience working with enterprise architecture frameworks such as TOGAF.
- Exposure to a range of platforms, technologies and integration patterns.
- Experience supporting platform modernisation or technology transformation initiatives.
- An understanding of agile delivery models and product-oriented ways of working.
- Experience contributing to architecture governance forums, design authorities or architecture review boards.
- Experience with ServiceNow capabilities such as ITSM, ITOM, CMDB, ITAM, SPM, App Engine, Visibility or Discovery.
What makes this role compelling
You will have the opportunity to influence the long-term direction of a significant enterprise platform and help establish the foundations for its continued development.
The role offers a blend of strategic architecture, collaborative problem-solving and practical delivery. You will be able to see how your decisions improve platform quality, reduce complexity and support better outcomes across the organisation.
You will join an environment where considered challenge is welcomed, knowledge is shared and people are encouraged to contribute ideas and continue developing their expertise.
