Environment & Sustainability Manager – Civil Works Alliance
Location: Suffolk/Ipswich - Hybrid

Join the exciting journey of one of the UK's largest nuclear projects at Sizewell C!

The Civil Works Alliance (CWA) is looking for a Environment & Sustainability Manager to provide leadership and direction across the Sizewell C project. You will play a critical role in ensuring contractual and regulatory requirements are met, guiding delivery teams at every level, and driving a culture of continual improvement in environmental performance and sustainability.

Partnering directly with the Head of Environmental Management and Sustainability, you'll oversee environmental risk management, compliance and audit programmes while leading and developing a team of advisors. Your role will help embed best practice across the project, supporting innovation and ensuring Sizewell C delivers to the highest sustainability standards.

CWA, appointed by the Sizewell C client, brings together three leading contractors — Laing O'Rourke, Bouygues, and Balfour Beatty — to deliver the civils scope including Enabling Earthworks, Main Civil Works, and Marine and Tunnelling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of the Environmental and Sustainability strategy across the project

  • Provide professional advice and leadership to project teams, subcontractors and stakeholders

  • Manage sustainability and environmental risks, ensuring effective mitigation and compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements

  • Support, develop and coach a team of Environmental & Sustainability Advisors

  • Deliver and oversee local audit programmes, inspections, and joint site tours, ensuring continuous improvement

  • Use data, audits, and incident findings to inform sustainability action plans and key business decisions

  • Build strong relationships with clients, regulators, stakeholders and delivery teams

  • Champion environmental and sustainability initiatives, innovations and best practices across the project

  • Ensure lessons learned are captured and embedded across teams through communities of practice

  • Provide regular reporting to the Delivery Leadership Team on environmental and sustainability performance

What skills & experience are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Proven experience in environmental and/or sustainability roles within the infrastructure or construction industry

  • Strong leadership skills, with experience managing and developing teams

  • Degree in a relevant field (environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or similar)

  • Knowledge and experience implementing ISO 14001

  • Strong commercial awareness with cost estimation skills

  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, able to influence at all levels

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Desirable:

  • Chartered Environmental Professional (CEnv)

  • Internal environmental auditor qualification

  • Competent ecological surveyor for at least one protected species

  • Knowledge of Development Consent Orders (DCOs) and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs)
