Laing O'Rourke is seeking a highly skilled Environment Manager to join our team driving sustainable success on a flagship project.

This is a unique opportunity to lead environmental performance on a major project, working within a collaborative partnership alongside some of the industry's leading contractors, consultants, and sustainability professionals

Location: South Oxford on project site

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage environmental risks and ensure best practice across all project phases – from design through delivery.
  • Lead and oversee remediation activities alongside specialist contractors, ensuring environmental best practices and mitigation measures are rigorously applied.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams — including project leadership, design, and construction to develop robust construction methodologies and deliver client-ready environmental documentation.
  • Develop and implement ISO 14001 compliant Environmental Management Systems (EMS), policies, and procedures.
  • Manage and supervise direct and subcontractor site teams, ensuring all activities align with environmental regulations and project goals.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external regulators and authorities, securing essential consents and permits to keep works on track.
  • Support the leadership team by contributing detailed environmental insights to main works cost development and risk management.

About you:

  • An environmental professional with proven experience managing complex construction environments, particularly with remediation and ecology/arboriculture requirements.
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation and management systems (ISO 14001, ISO 50001).
  •  A proactive and positive approach to adapt to evolving project needs and sustainability standards. 
  • Solid understanding of BREEAM, Biodiversity Net Gain, and carbon reduction strategies. Familiarity with ISO 20400 and PAS 2080 standards is desired.
  • Adept at navigating environmental regulations and building strong relationships with regulators and stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills with the ability to set clear goals, establish and inspire teams, and empower others to deliver high environmental standards. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Environmental Management/Sciences, Sustainability, or related field. Membership of a professional body such as IEMA, IES, or CIEEM is preferred. 
  • LEED AP, BREEAM, DGNB, Green Star, Green Mark, WELL certification or similar sustainability credentials.
  • Strong understanding of sustainable construction methodologies and environmental impact mitigation.
  • Experience with environmental compliance on large-scale, multidisciplinary projects.
