Play a key role in shaping a complex, high‑profile justice project.

We're looking for an enthusiastic and capable Deputy Design Manager to support the delivery of the architectural and façade design packages on the HMP Garth & Wymott redevelopment project.

This role is ideal for someone ready to take the next step in their design management career - working closely with an experienced Design Manager while gaining hands‑on exposure to a challenging, multi‑disciplinary environment.

What you'll be doing

As a Deputy Design Manager, you will support the management and coordination of design information—ensuring it meets programme, technical, safety and compliance requirements.

You will:

  • Assist in coordinating architectural and façade design packages across project stages.
  • Review design information for completeness, compliance and buildability, escalating issues as needed.
  • Support the production, control and distribution of design documentation.
  • Help track progress against the design programme and contribute to design reporting.
  • Participate in collaborative design reviews and manage straightforward queries.
  • Assist with change management, risk and opportunity updates, and statutory compliance activities under supervision.
  • Provide on-site support to the construction team, helping resolve technical queries.

This is a role where you'll learn by doing—gaining exposure while being supported by experienced team members.

What you'll bring

  • A degree in Architecture or an Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience working with design consultant teams and in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Exposure to on‑site delivery and an understanding of construction techniques and materials.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to track and manage design information.
  • A collaborative mindset, comfortable working with internal teams and external designers.
  • Willingness to learn, step up, and take on increasing responsibility as the project progresses.

Why join us?

At Laing O'Rourke, you'll be part of a team that prioritises technical excellence, digital innovation, and safe, high‑quality delivery.

This role gives you:

  • Mentoring from senior design leaders.
  • Experience on a major high‑security project—unique, complex, and career-defining.
  • Opportunities to develop towards a full Design Manager role.
  • A culture that actively champions Diversity, Equity & Inclusion—ensuring everyone can thrive.

Ready to grow your design management career?

If you're motivated, curious, and ready to take ownership of key design responsibilities within a supportive project environment, we'd love to hear from you.
