University: London Southbank Technical
Apprenticeship Title: Building Services
Job Title: Building Services Trainee
Project: Beckton STW
Day-to-day Overview: My day to day normally consists of liaising with the mechanical and electrical team and solving problems as they arise. I also look at design and the ways in which a task can be redirected to be more cost-effective and less time-consuming.
Key achievements to date: My best achievement to date must be a very positive mid-year review with my line manager as I believe this goes a long way as an apprentice. I also had a very positive review with my training provider which showed that I’m going in the right direction and I am ahead of where I should be.
What attracted me to the industry: I would have to say the way that construction is becoming more dynamic, in terms of Modern Methods of Construction and Automation. Every day is different for me and I am glad that this is the industry that I work in.
Why Laing O’Rourke: Laing O’Rourke are one of the largest engineering-based construction companies in the UK and the world which was extremely appealing to me. Also, the way of working and thinking in the company is one where you would not find elsewhere. LOR have a reputation for being one of the best companies to work for which also attracted me to apply for their PAP programme.
Tips for recruitment process: I would have to say just be yourself., especially in the interviews and assessment centre. People know when someone isn’t being their true self and could lead to you not being successful with your application.
Advice for apprentices: I would say just keep going forward and stay focused on your end goal. Don’t get distracted by silly things or other people’s opinions. You get out what you put in and there’s a massive reward at the end of all of it with Laing O’Rourke.
