With a growing pipeline of National Grid substation projects mobilising across South Wales and the West, we are expanding our Health, Safety & Wellbeing capability to support this increased demand.
At Laing O'Rourke, we are rethinking how safety is created—moving beyond traditional compliance and towards something more meaningful: Rethinking Safety Through Inclusion & Wellbeing. We believe that safety happens through people, and that trust, curiosity and engagement drive real performance.
If you want to be part of a team leading cultural change across essential national infrastructure projects, this could be the role for you.
The Role
As a Senior Health, Safety & Wellbeing Adviser, you'll support a variety of National Grid substation projects—working closely with managers, engineers and frontline teams to build positive, inclusive safety cultures.
You'll act as an adviser, coach and facilitator, helping teams understand how work is really done and enabling conversations that uncover what helps people succeed. You will work under the guidance of the newly appointed Senior H&S Manager, making this role ideal for someone looking to grow and progress.
What You'll Do
- Champion and actively deliver the Rethinking Safety Through Inclusion & Wellbeing approach.
- Support proactive assurance activities aligned to project risk profiles.
- Facilitate collective insights sessions, appreciative enquiries and positive investigations to understand how success is created.
- Facilitate Fatal & Severe Risk Assessments and contribute to risk assurance activities.
- Help operational teams explore work as imagined vs. work as done.
- Build strong, trusting relationships that encourage open dialogue about safety.
- Support leaders to build soft skills—listening, openness, collaboration and curiosity.
- Promote innovation and support adoption of new methods, technologies and systems.
- Assist with incident investigations and help the team embed meaningful learning.
- Act as a contact point for communication with enforcement bodies when required.
- Support monitoring, improvement and reporting of safety maturity goals.
What You Bring
- Level 4 qualification (minimum) in Health & Safety.
- Strong technical knowledge of occupational health, safety and wellbeing.
- Competence in coaching, training, assurance/audit or investigations.
- Member of a relevant professional body (or working towards membership).
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels.
- Curiosity, empathy and the confidence to ask questions that uncover insight.
- A positive, forward‑thinking mindset with a passion for improvement.
- Resilience and emotional intelligence—calm under pressure, thoughtful in approach.
- A self‑starter attitude: energetic, motivated, able to inspire and influence.
What's in It for You?
- Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits.
- Clear progression and professional development within a supportive team.
- Exposure to significant National Grid infrastructure projects.
- The opportunity to influence cultural change in a major UK construction environment.
- Learning and mentoring opportunities from highly experienced HSE leaders.
