Section Engineer – Enabling and Earthworks
Location: Suffolk
Join the exciting journey of one of the UK's largest nuclear projects at Sizewell C!
The Civil Works Alliance (CWA) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Section Engineer to support the successful delivery of the Sizewell C Project.
CWA, appointed by the Sizewell C client, brings together three leading delivery contractors — Laing O'Rourke, Bouygues, and Balfour Beatty — to deliver the civils scope including Enabling Earthworks, Main Civil Works, and Marine and Tunnelling.
We are seeking an Section Engineer to support the delivery of the Enabling Works and Earthworks scope. This early stage of the project includes major packages such as the SSSI Crossing, ground improvements, dewatering, diaphragm walls, sea defence, Marine Bulk Import Facility (MBIF), Beach Landing Facility (BLF), construction drainage outfall and bulk earthworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Review Method Statements and Risk Assessments and make improvements as appropriate.
- Produce task briefing sheets and deliver associated briefings.
- Carry out field audits and confirm sufficiency of control documentation.
- Produce and implement Permits to Work, including Permit to Dig, Confined Space Permits and Hot Works Permits.
- Guide and coach less experienced staff in setting out, technical requirements, and construction issue resolution.
- Interpret drawings, schedules and specifications, liaising with designers where necessary.
- Produce as-built drawings, records and handover documentation.
- Complete quality check sheets and implement systems and processes for compliance.
- Carry out independent inspections and site audits, coaching team members on best practice.
- Produce short-term fully resourced programmes and track KPI compliance.
- Establish production monitoring and graphical reporting to support intervention planning.
- Manage subcontractors, maintain site diaries, and draft correspondence to stakeholders.
- Produce and monitor budgets, track weekly costs, and support commercial reporting
What skills & experience are we looking for?
Essential:
- HNC/HND/Degree in an engineering discipline (preferably civil or related) or relevant site experience.
- CSCS card and SSSTS or SMSTS qualification.
- Strong understanding of method statements, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
- Full technical knowledge and practical experience in setting out.
- Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to coach and mentor team members.
- Proven ability to take ownership of tasks, solve problems and deliver results.
- Strong work ethic with flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights as required.
- Good commercial awareness and ability to manage subcontractors.
Desirable:
- Working towards professional accreditation (e.g. ICE, IHT).
- Strong knowledge of construction processes in one or more of the following areas: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Structures, Roadworks.
- People management and relationship management experience.
