Risk Manager
Location: Birmingham, UK
Sector: Power / Major Civils Infrastructure
Type: Full-time, Permanent
Be part of one of the largest and most meaningful upgrades to the UK power network in decades — a long‑term programme that will support the transition to clean energy and make a positive impact on communities across the country.
We're looking for a Risk Manager who brings curiosity, care and confidence to their work. You'll play a key role in shaping how risk is understood, communicated and managed across the Great Grid Programme, working within the Great Grid Partnership — a collaborative alliance between National Grid, delivery partners and design teams.
If you enjoy bringing people together, supporting thoughtful decision‑making and using insight to guide successful project delivery, this is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant programme.
The Opportunity
This role gives you the chance to lead and evolve risk management approaches across multiple, interconnected projects. You'll help establish supportive processes, accessible tools and clear governance that empower teams to work confidently and transparently.
Working closely with senior leaders, delivery teams, the client, integrator and partner organisations, you will help build shared understanding, encourage balanced decision‑making and ensure the programme continues to deliver value for both the partnership and Laing O'Rourke.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Lead and nurture the risk management process, including facilitation of inclusive workshops that bring different voices and expertise together
- Support teams by analysing and forecasting how risks might influence schedule and cost, including quantification and contingency planning
- Recommend thoughtful, proportionate contingency approaches
- Help project teams co‑create effective mitigation strategies
- Offer guidance on risk management tools, principles and best practices in a collaborative, approachable way
- Present clear, accessible data analysis and visual insights for senior decision‑makers
- Provide advice on how best to minimise exposure and enhance outcomes
- Maintain timely, accurate and transparent risk reporting
- Gather, interpret and share programme data to help teams make well‑informed decisions
You'll engage with a broad range of risks — from ground and environmental challenges to supply chain pressures, material price shifts and programme interfaces.
Essential Skills & Experience
You will bring:
- As a benchmark, around 5+ years' experience in a commercial, construction or risk management role on an infrastructure project of significant scale
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to bring clarity to complex issues
- Experience using risk management tools (including Riskonnect ARM), with knowledge of risk quantification and schedule/cost impact forecasting
- Qualifications in QS, PQS, project management, construction or risk management
- Additional accreditation such as IRM, PMI, APM or CIOB risk chartership is welcomed but not essential
- Compassionate and confident communication skills, with the ability to build trust and engage a wide range of stakeholders
- Experience working within a collaborative or partnership‑based delivery model
- The ability to translate complex data into simple, meaningful messages
Why Join This Project?
- Long‑term stability within a major national infrastructure programme
- A meaningful opportunity to contribute to one of the UK's most important energy transition initiatives
- A supportive, partnership‑led working environment
- Opportunities to get involved in strategic planning and programme‑level decision‑making
- Strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, digital tools and safe delivery
- The chance to positively influence how risk is understood and managed at programme level
The role will involve travel to Birmingham and periodic site visits as the programme progresses over the coming years.
