Location: M42 Corridor
Project: Construction of a major railway bridge over the M42 as part of the HS2 programme

We are seeking a skilled Deputy Design Manager to join our team on a high-profile HS2 infrastructure project. This site-based role will support the delivery of a large, complex railway bridge over the M42, involving significant engineering challenges while maintaining live motorway traffic flow (with full closures permitted only during structure lifts).

Role Overview

As the Deputy Design Manager, you will support the Design Manager in ensuring all design information is complete, coordinated, and compliant with contractual and technical requirements. You will be heavily involved in managing design changes during construction and ensuring the design supports programme, buildability, safety, and quality objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support site-based design management activities, including logging and managing design changes during construction.
  • Provide technical support and help resolve design-related queries during live construction activities.
  • Assist in coordinating between design teams, construction teams, and HS2 stakeholders.
  • Help ensure design deliverables align with programme, sequencing, and buildability requirements.
  • Monitor design risks and contribute to ensuring statutory and technical compliance.

Essential Experience

  • Rail or HS2 project experience (highly desirable).
  • Proven experience in bridge construction, particularly on large or complex structures.
  • Strong technical understanding of concrete and structural engineering.
  • Experience working directly with contractors on live construction sites.
  • Strong stakeholder coordination and communication skills.

Project Complexity

  • Delivery of a major railway bridge across the M42 without full motorway closure.
  • Requires innovative engineering solutions and meticulous planning of lifting and construction operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chartered or working toward chartership with a recognised engineering body.
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or a related discipline).
  • Experience collaborating with design consultancy teams and supporting on-site construction delivery.

We also take care of our people! Our competitive package includes:

  • Base salary + car/travel allowance
  • Access to PMI
  • Enhanced pension and parental leave schemes
  • Life, dental, and critical illness insurance
  • Income protection
  • 33 days' holiday (including bank holidays!)
  • Professional development opportunities
