Building safety refers to the comprehensive measures and regulations implemented to ensure
the structural integrity, fire safety, and overall quality of buildings, particularly higher-risk
structures, to safeguard the safety and well-being of individuals in occupation throughout the
building's lifecycle.
Role Purpose, Work Environment and Location
Laing O'Rourke is seeking a Building Regulations Principal Designer (BRPD) Technical Lead to
act as the BRPD Designated Individual (DI) for Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital in
accordance with paragraph 11G (2) of The Building Regulations 2010 (as amended).
This role includes ensuring that Laing O'Rourke complies with all its duties under Part 2A of the
Building Regulations 2010 (as amended), including services being provided by the Building
Regulations Principal Designer Advisor (BRPDA).
This is a ‘project' role.
The role may require occasional travel and overnight stays. This will be determined
by workload and requirements. It is essential that this capacity is maintained.
The role is a permanent appointment.
Key Accountabilities
• Planning, Managing, and Monitoring: Ensure suitable arrangements are in place for
planning, managing, and monitoring the design work undertaken at the Project to comply
with all relevant requirements of the Building Regulations. This includes any services
being provided by a Building Regulations Principal Designer Advisor (BRPDA), as
applicable to the project.
JOB DESCRIPTION
• Competence: Ensure that all designers (including Laing O'Rourke) involved in the project
are competent to carry out their duties.
• Cooperation: Facilitate cooperation among all parties involved in the project to ensure
compliance with all relevant requirements of the Building Regulations.
• Information Provision: Ensure that all necessary building information is provided to
designers and contractors promptly.
• Design Risk Management: Identify, control, or eliminate building safety risks.
• Higher-Risk Building Work: Manage higher-risk building work, ensuring that all relevant
information is communicated and reviewed periodically.
• Support the development, maintenance, and implementation of the Laing O'Rourke
Building Safety Management System, including procedures, processes, guidance, and
templates.
• Coordinate with other principal dutyholder designated individuals, ensuring communities
of best practice and knowledge is formed.
• Collaborate with discipline leads to ensure competence requirements associated with the
Building Safety Act and associated secondary legislation are embedded into relevant
deliverables.
• Support the development and delivery of training programs related to building regulations
and building safety.
• Monitor and track changes in the regulatory landscape, communicating implications and
necessary mitigations to the business.
• Support design teams in ensuring compliance with UK Building Regulations and all
relevant guidance.
Key Skills & Experience
• Approximately 10 years' experience in managing design and construction projects.
• Exceptional communication skills, capable of guiding teams through complex regulatory
frameworks.
• Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams and
external consultants and stakeholders.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Business acumen and an ability to identify and articulate value and opportunities with a
customer focus.
• Technical and Quality opportunity and risk management.
• Highly skilled and able to prioritise and deliver in a complex and fast-paced environment.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related
field.
