2026 Building Services Apprenticeship 

We're looking for bright and motivated apprentices who will bring energy, new ideas and a fresh perspective to help us become the recognised leader and transform the construction and engineering industry.     

 

Role Overview   

A Building Services Apprentice Engineer assists in the engineering and management of mechanical, electrical, and public health (MEP) installations throughout the lifecycle of construction projects.  As part of the Technical Function, successful candidates will sit in the Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Communication, Automation) division supporting our building services projects.  

Experience will be obtained across the MEP disciplines initially, before specialising in either mechanical, electrical or public health engineering.  

Building Services Technician Engineers help to ensure technical excellence and the safe and effective delivery of projects through design, procurement, technical appraisal, installation, commissioning, and handover stages.  

Off-site manufacturing solutions, Digital Engineering methods and sustainable technologies are at the forefront of how we deliver projects and Building Services Technician Engineers are key to help drive this for MEP works.  

 

Key Deliverables and Accountabilities of a Building Services Trainee 

  • Design Review & Understanding 
  • Assist in reviewing consultant designs and specifications. 
  • Learn how to interpret technical drawings and project documentation. 

Digital Engineering & Virtual Site Walkthroughs 

  • Work with the digital engineering team to explore site models virtually. 
  • Identify complex details and coordination issues before construction begins. 

Site Progress & Quality Assurance 

  • Monitor installation and progress on site against design plans. 
  • Carry out quality checks to ensure compliance before client handover. 

Work Package & Sub‑Contractor Support 

  • Help manage packages of work and liaise with sub‑contractors. 
  • Support supervisors in tracking deliverables and resolving issues. 

  Project & Coordination Meetings 

  • Participate in coordination and programme meetings. 
  • Contribute to project look‑ahead planning and issue mitigation. 

  Health & Safety Participation 

  • Take part in site inductions, toolbox talks, and reporting near misses. 
  • Support safe working practices and compliance with health and safety standards. 

Commissioning & Systems Setup 

  • Assist in commissioning services and plant. 
  • Learn how to set systems to work and verify performance. 

Change Management & Communication 

  • Support managing changes to design/brief due to client or site requirements. 
  • Communicate commercial and technical impacts through the supply chain. 

Location    

As a project-led business, the location of our work can vary depending on project needs. This role may require you to be prepared to work away from home at project sites across the UK.    

 

Apprenticeship Level and Standard  

This apprenticeship starts at Level 4 Building services engineering senior technician   then moves onto a Level 6 Building services engineer 

 

Apprenticeship Provider   

Laing O'Rourke collaborates with trusted and approved training providers (Universities) for our apprenticeship delivery. Successful candidates will be required to make an application to our preferred provider for the apprenticeship route you have chosen.

  • CV Submission 
    Submit your CV for review. We will assess your application against the entry criteria for the role you are applying for. 
  • Online Assessment 
    You will complete a series of assessments designed to understand how you approach workplace situations, your preferred ways of working, as well as exercises to evaluate your critical thinking and numerical reasoning skills. 
  • Video Interview 
    At this stage, you will be invited to record responses to two questions set by our hiring team. You will have sufficient time to prepare and ensure you present yourself confidently. 
  • Assessment Centre 
    Our in-person assessment centres, held at a LOR office, provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills through a combination of individual tasks, short interviews, and group activities. This is also a chance to experience our culture first-hand. 
  • Outcome 
    We aim to provide feedback and communicate the outcome of your assessment centre within two weeks.

Entry Requirements  

  • 5 GCSEs - preferably grades 7-4 in Maths, English and Science   
  • 3 A-levels must include Maths or Physics or BTEC or Equivalent      
  • You must be eligible to work in the UK.  We do not offer visa sponsorships 
  • Flexibility as you maybe required to work away
