We are seeking a Senior Design Manager – Structures to lead and coordinate structural design delivery for the Monklands Hospital Replacement Project — a major, complex healthcare development that will create a lasting legacy for patients, staff and the wider community.
This role sits at the heart of the project's technical leadership, ensuring structural design is developed, assured and delivered in line with project, client and business requirements from early design through to construction and handover.
The Role
As Senior Design Manager (Structures), you will be a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, responsible for managing, coordinating and assuring structural design information across multiple project stages.
Working closely with the Senior / Lead Design Manager, designers, construction teams and client stakeholders, you will ensure that design solutions are safe, buildable, compliant, optimised and aligned with programme, cost and sustainability objectives.
The role will be primarily project‑focused, operating between the Glasgow project office and the Monklands site in Airdrie, with visibility and influence across the full project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Design Management & Delivery
- Lead and manage the structural design process in line with Laing O'Rourke's Strategy for Design
- Ensure all structural design information is reviewed, coordinated and delivered in accordance with contractual, statutory and quality requirements
- Define, track and manage structural design requirements against client, project and regulatory obligations
- Plan, monitor and report on structural design programmes and dependencies
Technical Assurance & Compliance
- Manage statutory compliance and external assurance related to structural design
- Identify, manage and mitigate design risk and opportunity in line with governance processes
- Ensure structural solutions meet health, safety, buildability, maintenance and technical suitability requirements
Design Development & Optimisation
- Drive design optimisation to support programme certainty, cost efficiency, carbon reduction and buildability
- Manage and control design change, ensuring risks are mitigated and impacts clearly communicated
Collaboration & Leadership
- Lead collaborative design reviews and technical discussions across disciplines
- Coordinate effectively with architectural, services, digital and construction teams
- Support construction activities, responding to technical queries and ensuring quality outcomes
- Mentor and support junior design management colleagues within the project team
Handover & Construction Support
- Support construction and commissioning activities from a design management perspective
- Contribute to handover processes, including design records and certification
About You
You will be a confident and experienced structural design management professional, with a strong technical foundation and a collaborative leadership style.
You'll bring:
- Significant experience managing structural design on large, complex construction projects
- End‑to‑end design management experience from concept through to handover
- Strong understanding of different procurement routes and highly regulated environments (healthcare experience desirable)
- The ability to operate independently while aligning with wider project and enterprise strategies
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset aligned to continuous improvement
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
- Chartered status with a relevant professional body (ICE, IStructE or equivalent) — desirable
