Do you have a strong technical background in power distribution systems, substation engineering and protection and control design, with experience delivering technically complex electrical infrastructure projects?

Then our in-house MEP Engineering business, Crown House Technologies, is the company for you!

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Protection & Control Engineer to join our Enterprise Solutions team, working on a major Data Centre project in Didcot.

Working closely with our engineering, design and project delivery teams, you'll take ownership of protection and control design assurance, technical governance and stakeholder coordination, supporting the successful delivery of critical electrical infrastructure.

If you join us, you'll be a valued member of an industry-leading team, offering an exciting and varied career with access to some truly great projects.

What will the role look like?

  • Take technical ownership of Protection & Control (P&C) design assurance, ensuring all engineering deliverables comply with project specifications, industry standards and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Lead technical design reviews, quality assurance and approval processes for protection and control systems associated with substations and critical electrical infrastructure.
  • Review protection schemes, relay coordination, protection settings, SCADA integration and associated control and communication systems.
  • Ensure P&C designs comply with relevant National Grid requirements, client specifications and internal engineering governance procedures.
  • Provide technical expertise throughout the design, construction, commissioning and handover stages of the project.
  • Work closely with design consultants, OEMs, project delivery teams and specialist subcontractors to ensure technical requirements are clearly understood and achieved.
  • Identify and resolve design gaps, technical non-compliances and potential engineering risks, providing clear recommendations and corrective actions.
  • Lead and contribute to technical meetings, design reviews and engineering workshops with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in commissioning reviews and technical discussions relating to protection systems, relay settings and system integration.
  • Support the development and review of technical documentation, engineering procedures, design standards and quality assurance records.
  • Provide technical input into procurement activities, equipment selection and specialist engineering packages.
  • Ensure all P&C engineering documentation is accurate, traceable and aligned with project governance and quality requirements.
  • Promote a strong Safety by Design approach, ensuring potential hazards and technical risks are identified and addressed throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Support the implementation of innovative protection and control technologies, including IEC 61850, digital substations and advanced automation systems.
  • Where appropriately qualified and authorised, undertake Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE/LCDAE) responsibilities.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or a related engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience in Protection & Control engineering, ideally with over 10 years' experience in transmission and distribution design or delivery.
  • Strong technical understanding of electrical substations, protection schemes, relay coordination and protection settings.
  • Proven experience reviewing and assuring P&C designs for complex electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, substation automation, communication protocols and associated control systems.
  • Familiarity with National Grid technical specifications, business procedures and supplier requirements.
  • Experience working with major electrical equipment manufacturers and specialist design consultants.
  • Strong understanding of engineering design governance, technical assurance and quality management processes.
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 and other relevant protection and control communication standards.
  • Experience identifying and resolving technical design issues, engineering risks and compliance concerns.
  • Good understanding of UK health and safety legislation, including CDM regulations and Safety by Design principles.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong analytical, technical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage technical priorities, review complex engineering documentation and provide clear technical recommendations.

Experience working on data centres, major substations, renewable energy infrastructure or other mission-critical electrical projects would be highly advantageous.

Previous experience with National Grid BP141 design assurance processes or holding CDAE/LCDAE authorisation would also be beneficial.
