The Opportunity

Laing O'Rourke is seeking an experienced Civils & Geotechnical Design Manager to join our major energy infrastructure programme – the Great Grid Upgrade. This national initiative is one of the most important projects of our time, delivering new substations and transmission assets to connect cleaner, greener energy to millions of homes.

Based in Birmingham, you'll play a key role in shaping safe, sustainable, and buildable design solutions, working at the forefront of technical excellence and innovation.

What you'll be doing

  • Leading the civils and geotechnical design scope from concept through to handover.

  • Managing design requirements, risk, change, and compliance in line with Laing O'Rourke's design management procedures.

  • Collaborating with clients, consultants, and construction teams to deliver technically robust and buildable solutions.

  • Supporting construction through design reviews, technical queries, assurance, and commissioning.

  • Driving digital engineering, sustainability, and modern methods of construction to optimise outcomes.

What we're looking for

  • Chartered (or working towards) in a relevant discipline (civil, structural, geotechnical).

  • Proven experience managing multidisciplinary design delivery, ideally within civils, geotechnical, energy or infrastructure projects.

  • Strong understanding of governance, compliance, and risk management in design.

  • A collaborative leader with excellent stakeholder management skills.

  • Passion for innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
