The Commercial Manager Opportunity:

Expanded Structures, the specialist reinforced concrete basement, sub and superstructure frame construction division of Laing O'Rourke, is recruiting a Commercial Manager to join the team in South Wales.

You'll be joining our team delivering the Margam & Port Talbot Substations project for National Grid, a major power infrastructure programme supporting the electrification of Tata Steel's operations and the transition to greener steel production.

The project includes the expansion of the existing Margam 275kV substation, a new substation at the Tata Steel site and the associated infrastructure connecting the two facilities. Laing O'Rourke is delivering the works as principal contractor, working closely with National Grid and project partners.

This is an opportunity to take commercial responsibility across a significant power infrastructure project, working alongside project teams, clients and supply chain partners throughout the project lifecycle.

What will the Commercial Manager role look like?

  • Taking responsibility for commercial performance, including cost, forecasting, risk and opportunity.
  • Managing subcontract procurement, administration, change, accounts and claims.
  • Monthly cost reporting, commercial forecasting and management reporting.
  • Identifying, pricing and managing change control processes.
  • Advising project teams on contractual obligations, commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Producing contract reviews, BPR information and business planning inputs.
  • Supporting project budget establishment and cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Building strong relationships with clients, subcontractors and project stakeholders.
  • Providing guidance and support to junior members of the Commercial team.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • Degree (or higher) qualification in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Commercial Management.
  • RICS membership is desirable, though not essential.
  • Strong working knowledge and practical application of NEC contracts.
  • Significant commercial management experience within direct delivery environments, ideally across power, infrastructure or civil engineering projects.
  • Experience managing projects through the full lifecycle, including subcontract packages, change, risk and commercial performance.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
