Situated on the Somerset Coast, the Hinkley Point C project is one of the largest and most complex projects in Europe, and when complete will power around 6 million homes with low carbon electricity. Laing O'Rourke in joint venture partnership with Bouygues TP (BYLOR) is delivering the main civil engineering works constructing the buildings that will house the two main nuclear reactors.

MEP project values are typically in the region of £40m to £100m and within the Healthcare, Data Centre, Science & Research, Defence, Prisons, Green Energy, Rail and Nuclear sectors.

Founded on more than 40 years of experience, Crown House Technologies is redefining the value of asset services as a major systems integrator on complex construction programmes supplying a complete Building Services package with communications, ICT, intelligent building, monitoring, BMS and also has the UK's largest mechanical, electrical & public health manufacturing facility - a 129,000 sq ft factory - offering off-site manufacturing and assembly for digitally engineered modular MEICA packages.

Subcontracted to BYLOR, Crown House Technologies is responsible for the £120m MEP installation of the OSC Building, the main Control Centre which is housed between the two reactors, under the NEC 3 Option E form of contract.

An opportunity has arisen to appoint a Commercial Leader to the project. The role reports into Austin Watkins, business unit Commercial Leader for Crown House Technologies and working closely with the Project Leader the role will steer and lead the commercial aspects of the MEP provision, whilst returning an acceptable profit margin in line with the agreed project business plan. A key part of the role will be the leadership of the team of five commercial staff.

The Commercial Leader is responsible for taking full commercial responsibility and deploying over-arching commercial strategy for a major project – including management of project financial control, reporting and data management, contract administration, Change management, cash management and optimisation, risk management, contractual negotiations, and the financial accounts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver upon the commercial and financial performance targets and identify opportunities to improve performance. Ensuring the project and business profit targets are met and cash and margin are managed to maximise performance, all in a manner consistent with Laing O'Rourke Group processes.
  • Full knowledge and development of delivery strategy with the Project Leader including supply chain partners, plant, equipment, and self-delivery versus subcontract analysis.
  • Client and stakeholder management – building and maintaining productive and professional relationships throughout the lifecycle of projects.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to drive productivity improvements.
  • Work collaboratively with the operations/delivery team to validate the commercial viability of the programmes of work and ensure they are aligned to the project plan.
  • Manage the commercial interface for the packages with the client's team including contract reviews and other matters.
  • Work closely with the supply chain to ensure all key commercial milestones are achieved.
  • Work with the Commercial Leader to ensure information flows are adequate and commercial strategy is aligned.
  • Lead the commercial team, ensuring they maintain high standards of performance and that they develop as individuals.

Skills, Knowledge, Attributes

  • Good knowledge of MEP, NEC and commercial leadership of major projects, ideally within highly regulated environments such as Nuclear, Defence or Rail.
  • Excellent people leadership qualities – the ability to build and lead high performing teams, installing commitment, loyalty and motivation in team members. Leads by example in health and safety, inclusion and wellbeing and attitude.
  • Self-motivated: Ability to identify opportunities to challenge and improve on existing business process and approaches and develop a structured portfolio to deliver upon improvement to areas that will deliver greater certainty.
  • Ability to communicate complex and challenging issues with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to provide advocacy, support and ultimately deliver upon the commercial agenda.
  • Ability to influence and effectively communicate with a broad cross functional stakeholder group and resolve and address conflicting requirements.
  • Ability to bring experience in operational leadership to the team to ensure the solutions and commercial agenda aligns and translates into deliverable value within the project portfolio.
  • Rigorous, demonstrating creative and innovative thinking.
  • Possess clear and effective communication skills.
  • Has the ability to take a stand, make and receive feedback, provide solutions.
  • Results oriented and can make decisions and be held accountable for those decisions.
  • Recognised industry qualifications in quantity surveying and ideally professional bodies.
