Meet Georgia Checkland

Give us a brief overview of your day to day responsibilities.
Some of my day-to-day tasks include managing the critical payment call for the project and dealing with queries regarding drawing changes and pricing. I instruct variations for a multitude of different packages including partitions, ceilings, screeding, lifts, escalators and joinery. I also deal with the interim valuations of all my packages by following strict processes from sub-contracts. Cost flow and cashflow forecasts are key to staying within budget and to do this I report figures upstream and into the wider business. My job is really varied and busy, which I enjoy.
What are your key achievements/highlights to date?
Winning apprentice of the year from the University of Salford is a highlight of my career so far. Also being trusted to commercially deliver high value packages with support.
What attracted you to the industry?
The increasing number of women in the industry and the ability to be able to do something different everyday. I also like the variation of work in construction, no subcontractor package or job is the same.
What drew you to apply for your role at LOR?
My values really aligned with those of the company and I believe LOR is the best employer for my development as a quantity surveyor.
Do you have any hints and tips for the recruitment process?
Be yourself, try and talk to someone in the industry prior to applying and believe in yourself.
What advice would you give to students looking for a professional apprentice role?
Ensure the role you are applying for suits you, try your absolute best when in your role and don't be afraid to ask questions.
