Trade & Technical Apprenticeships

Our Trade and Technical Apprenticeship programme is developed for individuals with a passion for construction and engineering. It combines college and work-based training, allowing you to build your skills and gain a recognised qualification while working on some of the most exciting projects in the UK.

Introduction

The Trade and Technical Apprenticeship programme provides you with a formal college education, leading to a Level 2 and/or 3 apprenticeship standard in your chosen vocation. You will also gain a broad set of trade technical skills through on-the-job training, supported by our qualified and experienced workforce, and construction professionals. A dedicated mentor and approved training provider will work closely with you, providing regular feedback on your progress towards completing your apprenticeship.

A day in the life

Hollee-Ann joined Laing O'Rourke after completing her A-levels.

I enjoyed doing joinery at school; and by chance, I saw this opportunity. I applied and here I am!

“I did my A levels, but I didn’t want to go to university. So I started to look around at what I could do. I enjoyed doing joinery at school; and by chance, I saw this opportunity. I applied and here I am!

My friends were a little shocked and surprised at first. I am probably the only female joiner they know! But they’ve been really supportive.

I do block release as part of my apprenticeship, which I much prefer as I can really get into the subject during that time. I’m in my first year of a two-year programme; and I’ve learned so much already.

Being a woman on site is a little different, I suppose, just because there are so many men here – although that is changing. It took a bit of getting used to, but everyone has been great.”

Programme Structure

The programme begins with a detailed induction into the business and will range between two and four years, depending on the apprenticeship route you choose. It will also include bespoke development modules, designed to support you at key stages of your apprenticeship journey.

Quarterly tripartite reviews of your apprenticeship progress will take place between you, your workplace mentor and your training provider. This ensures you are on track, and these reviews will be used to identify any support required along the way.

  1. Step 1 - Join our workforce as an apprentice; hone your skills, learn from the wealth of expertise around you; become one of the next generation of experienced tradespeople Laing O’Rourke depends on to deliver its exciting projects.

  2. Step 2 - Working towards a supervisory or management position, while being supported by further education and a mentor currently in a management position.
