When did you join Laing O'Rourke?
I joined Laing O'Rourke on the summer and industrial placement programme, where I gained industry experience whilst studying at University. I then progressed to the graduate development programme in 2021. I am pleased I took this route because not only did it support my professional development, but it also made it easier for me to transition into the world of work once I had finished my studies.
Give us a brief overview of your day to day responsibilities as a graduate.
One of my main tasks was to write the reinforcement design briefs. I also managed the package for the east box raft slab reinforcement, ensuring that it interfaced correctly with other work packages on the job. I ordered and planned for all shear rails across the project and liaised with the commercial team to determine if ambiguous details were within scope and determined the products required.
What are your key achievements/highlights to date?
Handing over the first key date on the Old Oak Common project successfully and ahead of schedule was a highlight for me. I also enjoy teaching and seeing younger graduates that I have coached succeed and progress.
What attracted you to the industry?
Construction is an exciting, fast changing industry which is constantly evolving in the face of innovation. I was also attracted by the challenges arising with gender diversity and sustainability and how I can help to change that.
What drew you to apply for your role at LOR?
I applied for Laing O’Rourke’s summer placement scheme before joining the graduate programme and this opened my eyes to a company that has a high retention rate. The company works on high quality projects and with clients that align with most of my views, which drew me to want to come back and join the graduate programme.
Do you have any hints and tips for the recruitment process?
My way into the company was so straight forward due to the ease of the summer placement scheme, where I was able to show the project manager who I am, my strong work ethic and was able to succeed.
What advice would you give to undergrads looking for a graduate role?
Well firstly, I do think experience of sorts on site is necessary as it is a shock to the system if you are not used to it. But once you are sure site is for you, just be yourself, show that you are keen and willing to learn because the practical aspect of a site engineers role is not learnt in a classroom at university.
