Alfie Janeway

University: London Southbank Technical

Apprenticeship Title: Building Services

Job Title: Building Services Trainee

Project: Beckton STW

Day-to-day Overview: My day to day normally consists of liaising with the mechanical and electrical team and solving problems as they arise. I also look at design and the ways in which a task can be redirected to be more cost-effective and less time-consuming.

Key achievements to date: My best achievement to date must be a very positive mid-year review with my line manager as I believe this goes a long way as an apprentice. I also had a very positive review with my training provider which showed that I’m going in the right direction and I am ahead of where I should be.

What attracted me to the industry: I would have to say the way that construction is becoming more dynamic, in terms of Modern Methods of Construction and Automation. Every day is different for me and I am glad that this is the industry that I work in.

Why Laing O’Rourke: Laing O’Rourke are one of the largest engineering-based construction companies in the UK and the world which was extremely appealing to me. Also, the way of working and thinking in the company is one where you would not find elsewhere. LOR have a reputation for being one of the best companies to work for which also attracted me to apply for their PAP programme.

Tips for recruitment process: I would have to say just be yourself., especially in the interviews and assessment centre. People know when someone isn’t being their true self and could lead to you not being successful with your application.

Advice for apprentices: I would say just keep going forward and stay focused on your end goal. Don’t get distracted by silly things or other people’s opinions. You get out what you put in and there’s a massive reward at the end of all of it with Laing O’Rourke.

University: London South Bank University

Degree/Apprenticeship title: HNC in Construction Management (Design and Build) and a Degree in Architectural Technology

Job Title: Trainee Digital Engineer

Project: I work on the digital build for various projects when required.

Brief overview of your day-to-day responsibilities:

Currently in my role I take responsibility for performing digital tasks using a variety of Building Information Modelling (BIM) software packages. These tools have enabled me to be able to provide greater predictability of cost, quality, programme and safety on projects using the method ‘build twice, once virtually’. I work closely with Lead and Senior Digital Engineers who oversee and maintain the digital build process by assisting them with 3D model authoring.

Key achievements or highlights to date:

A key highlight for me has been the fact that I am able to fit into such a large team in the digital department and feel welcomed and supported to fulfil my full potential.

An achievement that I am proud of so far at Laing O’Rourke was when I attended a careers fair at Northfleet Technology College. I really enjoyed being able to advise students on the many opportunities there are in the digital sector of construction.

What attracted you to the industry?

I have always wanted to work in the construction sector. I was particularly drawn in by the constant innovation and technological advancements in construction which made me want to become a part of the future of the industry. It excites me to think what standard practice will look like in different stages of a project in the next few decades and how much more efficient it will look with the use of tools such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) and VR/AR (Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality).

What drew you to apply for your role at Laing O'Rourke?

I applied for a role at Laing O’Rourke because I liked the fact there is a huge range of opportunities throughout the company to constantly work on your professional development and improve your overall skillset. It was obvious to me that there would be a clear career path set out for me with a number of different routes available to go down in the business and, after completing my apprenticeship, I will be able to continue developing myself in my job role and building my knowledge of digital engineering.

Any tips for the recruitment process?

Make sure you research the business and the sectors Laing O’Rourke is focusing on. Understand the job role you are applying for and gain clarity on any questions you may have about it. Be professional and present yourself well.

What advice would you give to students looking for a professional apprentice role?

Practice your prioritisation and time-keeping skills as you will have your own workload whilst studying your degree at the same time. This is manageable as long as you stay on top of your deadlines and make sure to communicate with the relevant people so they know when you need to focus on your Uni work.

Meet Anni Bagdi

Role: DE&IM Assistant Digital Engineer

Project: Oxford Pandemics Sciences

What do you do?

I build digital, 3D models. The digital model helps us find and solve problems before they happen. It’s great to know that I’m part of the team that’s helping to save time and effort on jobs. I also get to work with some of the best and smartest engineering and design tech. We are part of the team straight away – I’m building models of temporary and permanent works and I’m getting great experience by being part of Digital Build review meetings with technical leads and engineers.

What have you done so far that you’re proud of?

I did a clash detection on temporary works packages. I found and helped resolved issues ahead of site execution prevent delays and maintain safety. I also got to support the logistics planning on site by performing vehicle tracking – which made sure that everyone moved material around the site efficiently and safely.

Why construction?

What first drew me to the industry is the combination of technology and real-world impact. I enjoy working with digital tools, but what excites me most is seeing how those tools shape the built environment and directly support the people who use it. There’s something rewarding about knowing the work I do behind a screen eventually translates into something physical and lasting.

No two projects are ever the same - each brings its own challenges, constraints, and opportunities to learn. That keeps the work engaging and means there’s always something new to tackle. At the same time, the industry is broad enough that if one role doesn’t feel like the right fit, there’s always space to explore different paths while still contributing meaningfully.

What drew you to LOR and the role you applied for:

Laing O’Rourke is the leader in digital engineering and modern construction methods. The company’s commitment to innovation - through DfMA, digital twins, and its Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction - creates a forward-thinking environment where I can contribute meaningfully while continuing to develop my expertise.

The role appeals to me as it sits at the intersection of design, technology, and delivery. I enjoy bridging these areas - transforming models and data into actionable outputs that directly support site teams. Working closely with engineers and project teams, while applying digital tools to address real-world challenges, aligns perfectly with the responsibilities I am eager to take on.

Tips for the recruitment process:

Get a head start by learning about Laing O’Rourke - its values are at the heart of everything we do here, learn about key projects, and the technologies they use. Prepare examples from your experience that demonstrate problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability - even if your experience isn’t in construction, examples from part-time jobs, volunteering, or other roles are valid. Practice common interview questions to build confidence, and keep a tracker to stay organised throughout your applications.

What advice would you give to students looking for a graduate or apprenticeship role?

Be curious - ask questions, and don’t be afraid to try different roles to see what fits. Showing genuine interest in the industry can open doors, and demonstrating a willingness to contribute and adapt goes a long way in standing out for graduate or apprenticeship roles.

Louis Arnold

Meet Louis Arnold

Role: Project Co-ordinator

Programme: Graduate Development Programme

Programme year: 2023

Project: CHtM Oldbury

What do you do? I plan and coordinate production activities for live projects, running daily shop-floor meetings and tracking progress against the programme. I manage materials by raising orders, monitoring stock, and coordinating deliveries to align with build sequences. I oversee quality control of manufactured steelwork and assemblies, checking against drawings and specifications and closing out NCRs. I interface with design teams, suppliers, and site teams to resolve queries, mitigate risk, and keep information flowing. I also control costs through accurate take-offs, optimising designs and workflows, and reducing scrap and rework.

What have you done so far that you’re proud of? I’m really happy to have delivered Emberton House on time, making the handover smoother and sharing what we learned along the way. I also took the lead as coordinator for HMP Channings Wood, which was both challenging and rewarding. At Olympia Central and G-Gate, I dove into logistics and quality assurance to keep things moving forward. I also identified and developed the business case for laser cutting technology to reduce rework, improve precision, and lower emissions in CHtM’s steelwork process. Plus, I’ve managed to save costs by using materials more wisely and working out better deals with suppliers.

Why construction? What attracted me to this role was the opportunity to turn complex designs into safe, buildable solutions that make a visible difference to places and communities. It offers a mix of problem-solving, teamwork, and continuous improvement - every day brings a new challenge and tangible results.

What drew you to LOR and the role you applied for? I was drawn to Laing O’Rourke because of its reputation for innovation, offsite manufacturing, and digital delivery, which matched my interest in modern methods of construction. The Graduate Development Programme stood out for its structured learning, real responsibility from day one, and clear pathways to professional registration. CHtM’s manufacturing environment also aligned with my goal to deepen technical understanding following my Civil Engineering degree.

Tips for the recruitment process: To prepare effectively for interviews, I create concise examples using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) that highlight problem-solving, teamwork, and ownership. With regards to the Laing O'Rourke interview, I researched the company’s projects, manufacturing capabilities, and innovation agenda, linking my examples to those themes to demonstrate alignment. During the interview, I made sure to talk through how I’d approach real-world scenarios and after the interview, I followed up with a brief reflection on what I learned and how I believe I could add value to the team.

What advice would you give to students looking for a graduate or apprenticeship role?: Get comfortable reading drawings and specifications because precision matters. Seek exposure to manufacturing or site environments - even short placements can teach you more than a textbook. Be curious: ask “why” and capture lessons learned, as improvement starts there. Focus on building the basics too; reliability, organisation, and communication go a long way.

Why did you choose to join Laing O’Rourke as an apprentice? I chose Laing O’Rourke because they are a large, well‑known company. I had seen many of their projects across London and was excited to get the opportunity to contribute to future projects. I think the company gives you the chance to develop and progress within the organisation.

Do you have any tips or advice for people applying for a trade apprenticeship? Turn up every day with a positive attitude and be ready to put in a good day’s work. Communicating well with your colleagues and supervisors is also really important.

Romario Steel-Richardson

Name: Romario Steel-Richardson

Job title: Installation Electrician

Project: Data Centre, London

Brief overview of your day-to-day responsibilities:

My day-to-day responsibilities include installing containment for electrical circuits which provide power and lighting to pivotal client projects. This involves working with materials such as metal conduit, ladder rack, tray, trunking and basket. To ensure the installation of these materials are correct, I follow the instructions of printed drawings and diagrams, as well as guidance from my supervisors.

What skills have you learned since starting your apprenticeship?

Although a lot of my work may seem repetitive there's always something new to learn and skills to develop. I'd say one of my skills that has significantly improved over the past six months is my ability to bend and form conduit over obstacles.

What has been your proudest moment or biggest achievement so far?

One of my biggest achievements has been completing my apprenticeship despite some initial setbacks. I am now fully qualified and have been able to increase my earnings by taking on more responsibilities.

What made you want to go into your trade?

When I left school, I wanted to do something where I could earn money while continuing to learn. An elder suggested an apprenticeship which strongly appealed to me.

Why did you choose to join Laing O’Rourke as an apprentice?

A friend of mine talked highly about a company they had worked for and the invaluable experience they gained there, Laing O'Rourke. I was impressed by the company's values and culture after researching Laing O'Rourke myself. This incited my application for an apprentice electrician role.

Do you have any tips or advice for people applying for a trade apprenticeship?

My advice for anyone unsure about what to do after school or at any point in life, is to do an apprenticeship. It allows you to constantly develop new skills in an environment where you will grow and be positively challenged. I am yet to regret making the decision.
